Danielle once shared something with me that stayed long after our conversation:
"Our wedding will not be very 'traditional' in a regular western sense. We will arrive together and will not walk down an aisle. A close friend is acting as our celebrant, but we have no wedding party and are essentially just choosing the parts of a wedding that feel like us and ignoring the rest. We're not really interested in the traditional 'preparation shots' (I don't know what people do with pictures of their wedding shoes or dress hanging up, but its not something we need). But we are gathering family and friends from all over the world (quite literally). It is the first time our families will meet one another and a very rare chance for us to have everyone we love who are normally very far apart all in one place. From that perspective photos of our wedding will be very cherished."
That honesty shaped everything about their day.
There were no staged details, no performative rituals, no unnecessary moments, only what truly mattered. No “getting ready” photos of dresses or shoes, no attempt to fit into a structure that didn’t belong to them. Instead, their wedding became something far more meaningful. Danielle & Chris have already built a life together, years of love, two beautiful little boys, this wedding wasn’t about beginning something new, but about honoring everything they had already created.
What made this day truly special wasn’t tradition, it was presence.
Family and friends travelled from all corners of the world to be there, from Kenya, Australia, America.. For many, it was the first time both families met. In a world where distance is the norm, this was a rare moment, everyone they love, in one place.
The journey to get there wasn’t easy. Flights were cancelled, plans were rescheduled, and the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East made travel uncertain. But in the end, everyone arrived.
And that, in itself, says everything about love.
Their wedding at The Slate Phuket wasn’t defined by structure, but by connection. It was quiet at times, chaotic at others, deeply joyful throughout. Children running, conversations flowing, laughter echoing between moments, it felt real, unfiltered, and deeply human.
I wasn’t there to direct or construct anything. I was simply there to witness.
To notice the quiet looks, the soft laughter, the way every embrace lingered a little longer, because moments like this don’t come often.
Danielle & Chris didn’t just celebrate a wedding. They celebrated a family.
